Is your monkey mind going bananas more often than you’d like? Join the crowd.

We are all trying to seamlessly squeeze as much as we can into the flow of our lives, continuously engaged with our surroundings and obsessed with our futures – all while navigating traffic, work, finances, love, life, friends, health…

Our overthinking and hyperactivity can create heightened levels of anxiety, physical stress, sleeplessness and depression that can negatively affect our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

This is why integrating mindfulness meditation into our lives can be hugely beneficial.

What is mindfulness meditation and how does it help?

Mindfulness meditation can be defined as a set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PHD, brought mindfulness meditation to the US in the 70’s when he founded  The Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School

He describes mindfulness as, “the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, nonjugementally, in the service of self-understanding and wisdom.”

Mind body practices focus on the interactions between our brain, mind, body, behavior, and have a proven agelong history of increasing calmness and physical relaxation, improving psychological balance, and enhancing overall health and well-being.

Sounds good, right?

Research shows mindfulness meditation helps support balance, health and homeostasis in our bodies in these profoundly important areas in our lives:

  • Helps with chronic pain
  • Reduces anxiety & depression
  • Supports healing in cancer & chronic diseases
  • Reduces work, family and emotional stress
  • Helps balance eating disturbances
  • Reduces heart disease
  • Supports sleep and sleeplessness issues

Integrating Cannabis into Your Meditation Practice

If you are like most of us, letting go of the constant chatter of our monkey minds isn’t easy to do.

Throughout history, nearly every culture and religion has had a tradition of using meditative practices for balance and clarity.

And for many spiritual practices and cultures, cannabis use and meditation have long walked hand-in-hand.

According to The Atharva Vedas, the fourth Vedic scripture of Hinduism, cannabis was one of five sacred plants and a guardian angel lived in its leaves. The Vedas call cannabis a source of happiness, a joy-giver, and a liberator that was compassionately given to humans to help us attain delight and lose fear.

Turns out, these age-old cultures knew what they were talking about.

Many people are finding that cannabis is a supportive tool to use with mindfulness meditation practices because our brains are full of cannabinoid receptors, and when cannabis interacts with these cannabinoid receptors, they produce euphoric, relaxing effects.

Meditation Practices and Cannabis Strain Pairing

Meditation isn’t a mysterious spiritual skill that you need to practice for years to receive the benefits. The principles behind meditation are pretty simple: Clear your mind, let go of the arising thoughts, whether you are future casting or reminiscing about a past event, and return to the present moment.

This may sound easy to do at first, but in reality, this is a bit trickier than you think, especially in the midst of our daily life.

This is where cannabis comes in; It can help us relax, focus, and clear our minds.

There are many types of meditation practices, but most have four elements in common:

  • A quiet location with as few distractions as possible
  • A specific, comfortable posture; sitting, lying down, walking
  • A focus of attention (a specially chosen word, phrase, or set of words, an object, or the sensations of the breath
  • An open attitude, letting distractions come and go naturally without judging them

So whether you decide to practice in an yoga class, a yoga nidra class, with a meditation group, or in silent mindfulness meditation at home, marrying meditation with cannabis can be a wonderful way to heighten your ability to relax and focus.

Once you find a practice that works for you – it is then equally important to explore finding the cannabis strain that works for you so that you can utilize the plant to help clear your mind, calm your body, and focus your attention on the present moment.

Meditation is a very personal experience. Take time and experiment with the different ways cannabis can enhance your practice, from smoked, vaped, or edibles,  until you find the one – or two – that perfectly support your practice.

To help get your started, we’ve curated weed strains that can be paired with your yoga, meditation or mindfulness practice.

Here are 4 strains we highly recommend pairing with mindfulness meditation practices

Pure One – 1g GSC (H)

Pure one is one of our favorites! They use a proprietary triple distilled oil, and all of their products are pure, organic, unadulterated, and 100% solvent free with vigorous testing done to all of their products to assure they remain pesticide free. This allows for you to have the upmost flavor profile experience possible.

Girl Scout Cookies is a classic strain – for a very good reason. Its effects are consistent: A soothing, potent mood boost, offering relaxation, mental euphoria, and creativity. Waves of bodily warmth and pleasure fill you as tensions fade. It’s the ultimate partner for your daily meditation.

*Note: This is the cartridge only. You will want to get the 510 thread battery kit. Once you have your rig, you can add other cartridges with different strains.

Bloom Farms GG #4 (formerly known as Gorilla Glue)

We love Bloom Farms. From soil to oil, they work to create safe products, starting with the responsible California farmers who grow their cannabis. Each oil is extracted without petroleum-based solvents, meticulously lab-test for purity and consistency and they use FDA-grade BPA-free cartridges.

GG#4 is a potent hybrid strain that delivers heavy-handed euphoria and relaxation, mental uplift and encourages clarity before gently melting into long-lasting, heavy relaxation. Perfect for a yoga nidra or mindfulness practice.

THC’s Pineapple Upside Down Cake (H)

We can’t get enough of Pineapple Upside Down Cake! This is an indica dominant hybrid strain created through crossing the delicious Pineapple Trainwreck with the infamous Cookie Monster. With this bud, get ready for a flavor adventure of a lifetime. Pineapple Upside Down Cake blends nutty herbs with sweet tropical fruits for a delicious flavor that will leave you begging for more. The aroma is very sweet and tropical with an herbal nutty overtone that’s slightly earthy and spicy.

Adding to the tastiness of this strain, is the nice lifted effect that soon fades into a relaxing and slightly sedative long lasting high. You’ll feel a euphoric cerebral onset that fills you with pure happiness and ease, pushing out any negative or racing thoughts. A light tingly body high comes next, creeping up on you before suddenly taking hold and pulling you into a state of pure relaxation. Whether you choose yoga, walking or sitting meditation, this strain will support a positive mood and enlightened thoughts for you and your practice.

Venice Cookie Co – 1:1 Classic Pretzel

Venice Cookie Company’s motto is “Peace. Love. Cannabis.” And we love them! Their products are made with whole plant extracts from sustainable sun-grown cannabis and each batch is lab tested to ensure consistent potency and safety.

This pretzel provides a 1:1 dose of CBD:THC, perfect for inducing a good, peaceful state of mind, while calming any racing thoughts.

With edibles, always start low and go slow (5mg THC or less) until you know how it affects you. It can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as 2 hours to feel the effects of a cannabis edible! For safety, wait the full 2 hours for the effects to manifest before eating more.

Peace. Love. & Happy Meditation.
