Hemp CBD Oil vs. Cannabis CBD Oil. Does all CBD oil work the same?
The question is a good one. As it can be confusing, let’s start with the basics. CBD and THC have been shown to provide relief for an array of symptoms including sleep issues, pain, nausea, anxiety, and inflammation.
What is the difference between hemp and cannabis?
Hemp and cannabis (also known as marijuana) are both derived from the Cannabis Sativa family. They share similarities, and, they have several crucial differences. Hemp contains a very low concentration of THC (0.3% or less), and a very high concentration of CBD. Because of this, hemp is not psychoactive. Cannabis is a Cannabis Sativa plant that is bred for its resinous glands (known as trichomes). These trichomes contain high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) concentrations between 15% to 40%. THC is most known for its psychoactive properties. Cannabis is relatively low in CBD, except for a few CBD rich cannabis strains.
Is there a difference between hemp CBD and cannabis CBD?
CBD is CBD. The single chemical molecule is the same whether it is derived from the hemp plant or the cannabis plant. While the single CBD molecule is the same, there is a very important difference between cannabis CBD and hemp CBD, and it has everything to do with cannabinoids and the “entourage effect”.
Cannabinoids and how they work in our bodies
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in cannabis flower’s resinous glands. Cannabidiol or CBD – and its sister like component THC – are cannabinoids. Cannabinoids provide medicinal benefits by interacting with the largest molecular receptor system in the human body: the endocannabinoid system (ECS), discovered in the early 1990’s by Israeli scientist Dr. Rapheal Mechoulam.
What is our endocannabinoid system?
Our endocannabinoid system’s function is to provide homeostasis in our body: the dynamic state of equilibrium for optimal functioning. Our ECS is comprised of cannabinoid receptors sites throughout our brain (CB-1 receptors) and body (CB-2 receptors). And, as it turns out, each type of cannabinoid binds to different endocannabinoid receptors in our bodies, and have different effects, depending on the receptors they bind to. For example, CBD has a strong binding relationship with CB-2 receptors located throughout the body. And THC binds to the CB-1 receptors in the brain. The endocannabinoid system has been described as a lock and key type system. When you ingest a cannabinoid, it locks into, and turns on, our internal cannabinoid receptor sites.
Is there a difference in the medicinal effects of cannabis CBD vs hemp CBD?
As it turns out, yes.
Dr. Mechoulam also discovered something called “the entourage effect”: A synergy that happens between the different compounds in the cannabis plant. Compounds like:
Terpenes – The aromatic oils in all plants, cannabis included – that give the plant a distinctive smell or flavor, like citrus, lemon, berry, or pine.
Flavonoids – A group of polyphenolic compounds known for providing vivid color pigments to the plant kingdom—the red in roses for example – taste, smell and overall sensory experience.
Other cannabinoids – There are over 113 different cannabinoids to have been isolated so far in cannabis.
This synergy – the “entourage effect” – describes how the medicinal impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts. The combination of medicinal terpenes and secondary cannabinoids in high resin cannabis interact with CBD and THC to enhance their therapeutic benefits.
Which CBD is most therapeutic?
CBD disposables are available in non-psychoactive (1:0 boost), low psychoactive (4:1 rise & shine) and psychoactive (1:1 half & half) options. Each disposable has a unique flavor that you will truly enjoy.
In terms of cannabis as medicine, it’s no longer a question as to whether CBD has medical value. Now, the focus is on how to optimize your therapeutic use of CBD. The science shows adding any amount of THC to a therapeutic dose of CBD largely enhances CBD’s effects. Products that include all these components are called whole-plant or full-spectrum. If choosing a full-spectrum cannabis CBD oil, one of the most important things to consider is the ration between CBD and THC.
1:1 Ratio CBD:THC = The psychoactivity of THC starts to diminish.
2:1 Ration CBD:THC = There is almost no psychoactivity at all.
4:1 Ratio CBD:THC = This might be used by someone with a high sensitivity to THC.
*Children are not sanctioned to use products with THC because of its psychoactivity.
While there is new research and innovation coming every day, the most important choice, is to choose a product that works well for you.
